Everyone is trying to be more environmentally conscious these days and automotive manufacturers are no different. Creating more eco-efficient cars and encouraging a more overall “Greener” lifestyle throughout dealerships and customers are ways in which the industry is attempting to fight global warming and help preserve our environment for generations to come. For Honda, one of their biggest steps into promoting sustainability was the creation of the Honda Environmental Leadership Program in 2011.
Through this program, dealerships are encouraged to adopt greener habits through energy reduction in areas such as water fixtures, lighting, cooling and heating. In order to assist dealers on ways to accomplish these tasks, Honda created a 93-page “Green Dealer” guide which is available to be downloaded on greendealer.honda.com. This program is completely voluntary, but dealerships that make significant reduction costs do become eligible for a Honda Environmental Leadership Award. Now, Honda has chosen to expand that program in order to include power-equipment dealers, engine distributors, powersports dealers and marine dealers.
We’re pleased to announce the expansion of the Honda Environmental Leadership Program to our powersports dealers,” said Michael Rizner, American Honda Manager of Motorcycle Dealer Development. “Environmental awareness is an important part of being a responsible corporate citizen, and the automobile dealerships who have participated in the program have demonstrated that not only is the program capable of reducing the dealer’s environmental impact but it can also assist in reducing overhead. We’re looking forward to helping more powersports dealerships reduce their environmental footprints by enrolling in this program.”
The recipients of these awards are selected by third-party evaluators in order to offer a score for each dealer based on its eco-friendly upgrades. Their overall score earns them recognition to either the Silver, Gold or Platinum level, with a few select earning “Electric Grid Neutral” status. This means that the energy produced by renewable energy sources is equal to or greater than that what they consume from their local electric utility over a one-year period.
Through this program, over the past three years, sixty-five different automotive dealerships have reduced their energy consumption by at least 10 percent.
